Abstract
When in 1988 the hepatitis A non B virus was identified by means of molecular biology techniques, a first step was taken in the knowledge of natural history and the epidemiology of what is now called hepatitis C. When easy-to-use analytical techniques were available to detect antibodies against the hepatitis C virus, epidemiological studies on the prevalence and incidence of this infection multiplied and, in parallel, advanced the knowledge about its transmission mechanisms. The available diagnostic techniques have been, therefore, an important step in the way that we must continue to know the disease adequately and, consequently, to treat it and prevent it. There is no doubt that the use of drugs such as interferon and ribavirin has been a breakthrough in the treatment of the disease. The emergence of new drugs and a better understanding of how to use them properly to treat the illness justify that the Department of Health and Social Security has been considering updating the first Guide for the prevention and control of hepatitis C, which was published in 1999.
With the aim of making available to medical professionals in Catalonia a summary of the knowledge available on the causative agent, the epidemiology, the clinic and especially on the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of this disease, the Department of Health and Social Security has once again counted on the collaboration of renowned experts in the subject and has developed this second edition of the Guide for the prevention and control of hepatitis C, which I am pleased to present.
