Introduction: The objective of this article is to show the results of the tuberculosis surveillance in Catalonia during the year 2012 and assesses its evolution during the last years. Methods and results: The epidemiological surveillance of the tuberculosis in Catalonia combines passive and active systems of surveillance. The year 2012 1,231 cases have been notified which corresponds to a rate of 16.3 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. During this year the rate has diminished 8.9%. 61.1% of the cases are men and 38.9% are women, with a rate of 20.2 and 12.6 respectively. The median age of patients was of 41.4 years, figure significantly higher in the autochthonous people (47.9 years) in comparison with the newcomers (33.9 years). The pediatric cases represent 7.8% of the total. The year 2012, 46.4% of tuberculosis cases were newcomer people that presented a rate of 40.9, four times higher than the rate to autochthonous people (10.7 cases for 100,000 inhabitants). Primary resistance in some antituberculous of first-line drugs was of 11,8%, in isoniazid, of 5.5%, and simultaneously in isoniazid and rifampicin, of 0.7%. Conclusions: The improvement of indicators, such as the incidence and the completion of the treatment, suggests that breakthroughs are being made. However, in order to reach a sustained reduction of rates it is necessary to continue the efforts in the provision of healthcares and also in the public health.
