Utilidad de los listados de verificación quirúrgica: efecto sobre las relaciones y comunicación en el equipo de trabajo, la morbi-mortalidad y la seguridad del paciente
Abstract
Objective: To assess the effect of surgical checklist on teamwork communication, morbidity
and mortality related to surgical procedure and patient safety.
Type of intervention: Use of surgical checklists according to the models proposed by the World
Health Organization, SURPASS and Joint Committee.
Study design: Systematic review of the scientific literature.
Methodology: Searches of the following databases Medline, Scopus, The Cochrane Library Plus, ISI Web of Knowledge, TRIP Database, National Health Service Evidence, National Health Service Centre for Reviews and Dissemination, Health Technology Assessment Database, National Health Service Economic Evaluation Database, Database of Abstracts and Reviews of Effects were performed through the keywords of interest and the reference review of the most important articles. Studies with the highest scientific evidence have been selected until March 2015.
Results: After the screening of 259 references, 14 were selected according to the inclusion
criteria: 4 systematic reviews and meta-analysis and 10 systematic reviews. Surgical checklists showed a positive effect on patient safety (decreases in the complication rate, mortality rate and surgical wound infection rate). These tools also promoted a high communication among the surgical
teamwork members. However, the existent barriers should be eliminated to achieve efficient implementations for having a high compliance rate.
Conclusion: The surgical checklists had a positive effect on the improvement of teamwork communications, the reduction of morbidity and mortality related with the surgical procedure and the improvement of patient safety.
