Economic crisis; Child health; Catalan Health Survey
Objectives: To analyze changes in the family living conditions and socioeconomic status of children population in Catalonia between 2006 and 2010-2012; to study the association between changes in these social determinants of health and health-related behaviors, physical and mental health, and health-related quality of life (HRQOL), and the pattern of use of healthcare services. Methods: Analysis based on two cross-sectional assessments in representative samples of the population aged 0-14 from Catalonia, based on the Catalan Health Interview Survey of Catalonia (ESCA) 2006 and the continuous ESCA 2010-12. Health Interview Survey administered to the responsible person of children under 15 years (n= 2200 in 2006 and n=1967 in 2010-12). Variables included were perceived health, restriction of activities and chronic conditions; obesity and overweight (from reported height and weight), eating habits, sedentary behavior, physical activity and risk behavior (scales of the Child Health and Illness Profile, CHIP), mental health (Strengths questionnaire and Difficulties, SDQ) and healthrelated quality of life (KIDSCREEN-10) were also collected. Variables on the use of healthcare services included visits in the last year and specifically pediatrician visits, specialists, dentists, and emergency room visits, and also visits in the last 15 days. Healthcare coverage and major sociodemographic variables included age, sex, maternal education level, and family employment status. Proportions or means (depending on the nature of the variable) of health-related behaviors, physical and mental health, HRQOL, and healthcare service utilization were analyzed according to socioeconomic status and the study period (2006 vs. 2010-12). The 95% confidence interval (95%CI) was computed taking into account the complex sample design.
