Abstract
The surveillance of the perinatal health allows to have an overall view of the pregnant women
and of the newborns who are born in Catalonia. Through monitoring the main perinatal health indicators the data obteined shows trends and patterns comparable over time that
help professionals to plan on maternal and child health sphere. Birth Registration has a coverage practically of 100% of the newborns who are born in the maternal centers of Catalonia in the sanitary public and privat network. In 2012 the number of births in Catalonia was of 77,548 newborns. 29.6% of the mothers residents in Catalonia who give birth has foreign nationality and 33.4% are older than 34 years. 4.8% of the childbirths are multiple and 28.4% are born by caesarian section. The prevalence of tobacco addiction in the first period of pregnancy stands in 23.1% while in the end it is of 12%. 7.3% of the newborns are prematures and 7.7% are born with low weight. 83.4% of the newborns that born in 2012 fed through maternal lactation in the moment of being born. In comparison with the former years an increasing trend is observed in the age of the mother and the childbirths for caesarian section. The maternal lactation and the tobacco addiction at the beginning as well as at the end of the gestation show a positive evolution.
