Abstract
Introduction. The Microbiological Reporting System of
Catalonia (SNMC) has been a voluntary microbiological reporting
system until 2015. With Decree 203/2015, this system becomes
mandatory. The SNMC is part of the Epidemiological Surveillance Network of Catalonia, which collects reports on microorganisms
that have an impact on public health.
Methods. Descriptive analysis of microbiological statements was
carried out by SNMC health centres’ laboratories during 2014 and
2015, once validated and refined.
Results and discussion. A total of 21,747 microorganisms
were registered in 2014, and 28,467 in 2015. The most common
clinical entities were respiratory infections (35.5%) and enteritis
(32.6%). While the number of reported cases of mycobacterial
infection diminished over the course of the period analized
and in comparison with the previous analysis (2013), the
number of reports on sexually transmitted diseases and respiratory
infections increased significantly. Meningoencephalitis,
enteritis and other infectious diseases also increased slightly,
and the numbers for bacteraemia of unknown origin remained
relatively stable.
