Abstract
The term Diabetes Mellitus (DM) defines a series of metabolic disorders characterized by chronic hyperglycemia and disorders in the metabolism of carbohydrates, fats and proteins, resulting in defects in insulin secretion, in the action of this or in a mixture of both mechanisms. Acute manifestations, which can motivate the diagnosis, are those commonly known as cardinal symptoms of DM (polyuria, polydiphosis, polyphagia, blurred vision, and, less frequently, weight loss) and diabetic ketoacidosis (most commonly in DM type 1 [DM1]). In the long term, there may be microvascular and macrovascular complications.
