Epidemiology: Treatment; Damage reduction; Substance use disorder
T. Introduction. In our society drug use is associated with a high burden of morbidity and mortality.1 Several indicators are agreed at EU level for epidemiological surveillance.2 Data on trends in substance use and related problems are offered through the triangulation of these indicators. First treatment onset episodes for substance use disorder (SUD) is one of the main indirect indicators to monitor this phenomenon.3,4 Material and methods. Data were obtained from the notification of beginnings of treatment for SUD with potential for abuse and addiction in outpatient centres for drug dependence care and follow-up (CAS). Information on other drug dependence services is also included. Results. During 2017, 13,716 outpatient starts of treatment were notified for SUD in Catalonia. Primary substances of abuse reported in treatment admission were alcohol (43.4%), cocaine (22.2%), heroin (12.8%), and cannabis derivatives (12.4%). The average age of the reported cases was 41.2 years and 22.2% of cases were women. 33.6% of people who started treatment in 2017 were unemployed and 10.5% had not completed primary education. In 2017 there were 974 admissions in hospital detoxification units and by the end of the year there were 7,482 people in methadone maintenance treatment programmes. Supervised drug consumption rooms hosted almost 125,000 consumptions, and more than 875,000 sterile syringes were provided by the needle and syringe programme.
