Abstract
Acute appendicitis (AA) is an inflammatory disease of the cecal appendix, the treatment of which is appendectomy. It is the most common surgery in children. Its incidence is 7.5 to 22 AA per 10,000 inhabitants. It affects 0.3% of children between 0 and 15 years old. It is most common in ages 8 to 13, but can occur at any age, except in children under 2, when it is exceptional. In Catalonia, during the period 2014-2018, 8,804 admissions of appendicitis were recorded in the population under the age of 18.
