Abstract
The main objective of the preventive and health promotion activities included in the guidelines of pregnancy monitoring and childbirth care and support in Catalonia is to improve pregnant women and babies’ health, based on evidence-based recommendations for primary and secondary prevention (screening). These two protocols also specify the level of complexity of health centers designed for pregnant women and their babies, depending on their health and social risk factors. In Catalonia, during the last 20 years, the monitoring of the main indicators of perinatal health triggers two reflections: on the one hand, the current implementation of the Ministry of Health’s 2003 and 2005 protocols has been insufficient, suggestions more powerful monitoring and evaluation mechanisms should be established; on the other, it should be noted that some maternal health problems have more to do with the social context than with the health context.
