Epidemiologia de les síndromes de sensibilització central a Catalunya: fibromiàlgia, síndrome de fatiga crònica i síndrome de sensibilitat química múltiple
Abstract
In December 2016, the Catalan Operational Plan for the care of people affected by central
sensitization syndromes (CSS): fibromyalgia (FM), chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) and
multiple chemical sensitivity syndrome (MCS) was published. After these years of
implementation, an evaluation process is needed to refocus the Operational Plan. To give
context to this evaluation, it is necessary to know the epidemiology of the SSCs and to
determine in Catalonia the evolution of the prevalence and incidence of FM, CFS and SSQM
and to know which are the population subgroups where the syndromes predominate to
improve the impact of the Plan's activities. A descriptive observational study was conducted
to estimate the incidence and prevalence of SSC in Catalonia over a 10-year period (2012 to
2021). It has been estimated that 3% of the population is affected by one of these
syndromes, with FM being the most prevalent. We have observed how the number of cases
of SSC has been increasing over the last 10 years, these syndromes are more frequent in
women than in men, impacting more in the age groups from 35 to 65 years, with a
heterogeneous distribution across all health regions and most of them presenting a
decreasing socioeconomic gradient, impacting more in the lower levels of the insured
population.
