Microplastics; Risk assessment; Bivalves
The increase in plastic waste in the environment, especially in seas and oceans, has generated a concern from the point of view of food safety, since microplastics can enter the food chain through the air, the sea water, fresh water and underground and, therefore, be present in products intended for human consumption. The aim of the present study is to determine in different types of bivalves (mussel, curly oyster and tellerine) the impact of purification time on the levels of microplastics and their characteristics of size, morphology and polymeric composition. The potential exposure of microplastics through bivalves is relevant because they are filtering organisms that incorporate microplastics present in the sea and, unlike other marine animals, such as fish, they are consumed whole.
