dc.description.abstractFarmers, ranchers, food business and feed manufacturing operators need to have available the necessary knowledge to prevent, reduce or prevent mycotoxin contamination of their products. Mycotoxins are very stable substances and it is very difficult to remove them from food. They resist practically all food industry processes, and at any rate some of these processes are only capable to reduce its concentration. It is therefore important to prevent fungal growth in raw materials. The European Union food safety policy has always been committed to implementing preventive measures to address food hazards. However, considering the magnitude of the problem of mycotoxins, recently it opened the way to implement detoxification treatments for raw materials used in feed. The present document, which is addressed to farmers and operators of food and feed industries, documents methods of prevention and reduction that can be applied in Europe, as well as other methods that have proven to be experimentally effective or are etiher allowed outside the European Union.
