Information and communication technologies (ICTs) and the digitization of content are transforming our societies and the way of generating knowledge. In the sanitary field, the reuse of information available to the Health Administration offers a wide range of applications, especially in the field of research and evaluation. In addition to improving the quality and efficiency of the research, the use of this information contributes benefits for the public, increasing the quality of the healthcare received, and for the healthcare system as a whole, improving the decision making. The main associated risks are those that affect the privacy and the security of the information and the use that is made of it. Therefore, it must be ensured that initiatives that use anonymized health information for research purposes meet the highest levels of security and that any research project has the favorable opinion of an ethical committee and clinical research (CEIC).
