Abstract
The critical assessment of biomedical literature is fundamental for health professionals; it helps them to manage the scientific information they receive, select the important information for clinical practice and contribute to keeping their knowledge updated. In this article we present the phases of critical reading, including the methodological revision about different designs of epidemiological studies, and a special emphasis on the comparative and randomized clinical trial. To facilitate the assessment process of the published studies, the reader is provided, on the one hand, instruments that facilitate the evaluation of the designs used in the various types of research and, on the other hand, the measures of association or effect that are used to evaluate the results of the interventions in the framework of a clinical trial.
