Abstract
Short Intestinal Syndrome (SIC) is a complex minority condition caused by the functional or anatomical loss of large intestinal segments that seriously compromise the absorption capacity. The most common aetiology in adults are surgical resections, either for mesenteric ischaemia, traumatism, radiation enteritis, Crohn's disease or bowel obstruction. In children, the main causes of SIC are congenital and perinatal diseases such as necrotizing enterocolitis, defects in the abdominal wall and Hirschsprung disease, among others
