This study investigates whether the municipalities of Sant Julià de Llor/Bonmatí and its surroundings have a higher incidence of cancer due to a lead recycling factory and other battery components operating since 1964. The research analyzed all new cancer cases in the province of Girona between 2000 and 2020, with a special focus on lung, stomach, and brain cancers. The results did not show a significant increase in cancer incidence in Sant Julià de Llor/Bonmatí, where the factory is located, with a relative risk (RR) of 0.94 and an excess probability (EP) of 0.16. However, adjacent municipalities showed an increased relative risk, with RR values of 1.06, 1.10, and 1.19, and EP values above 0.8. Regarding specific cancers (lung, stomach, and brain), no increased risk was observed in the area. The authors conclude that the overall cancer risk is higher in the municipalities neighboring the factory but not in Sant Julià de Llor/Bonmatí itself. Further research is needed to determine whether this increased risk is linked to battery chemicals or other environmental or etiological factors.
