Perchlorate; Chlorate; Food
The document addresses the presence of perchlorate and chlorate in food and water, derived from fertilizers, industrial processes and disinfection. Maximum limits have been established in the EU (Regulations 2023/915 and 2020/749) and it is recommended to apply the ALARA principle to reduce contamination. EFSA (2025) has updated the tolerable daily intake for perchlorate to 1.4 µg/kg bw/day, while for chlorate it remains at 3 µg/kg bw/day. The most vulnerable groups are infants, children and pregnant women. Authorities continue to collect data and promote good practices to minimize risks.
